How often do you have to update your antivirus software?

posted in : Antivirus FAQs Blog | comment : 0

As you probably know by now, the internet is constantly changing. Everyday, new websites are made and billions of bytes of data are transferred between users. While most people do not spend a lot of time thinking about viruses, that doesn’t mean that you should just ignore viruses until they go away.

Just as new websites are being created every day, so are new viruses. Hackers are always trying to find new ways to get into computer systems so that they can mine your PC for valuable data, like your financial records and social security numbers. Most of the time, these hackers use this information to steal your identity, and with that identity, they can open up multiple lines of credit such as mortgages, reserve lines, and credit cards. As you can imagine, this can be very damaging to your credit score as well as your financial status.

In order to prevent this process from happening, you need to make sure that your antivirus software is up to par. Choosing the best antivirus program is only one part of the battle. Once that program is installed on your PC, you still need to update it on a regular basis. So, how often should you update your antivirus software?

You should check for updates on your antivirus software every day. New viruses are constantly being created, so you need to have the most up to date protection available. One of the best habits to get into is checking for updates on your antivirus software before you log off every night. If there are updates to install, you can simply turn off your monitor and let the updates run. This way, checking for updates isn’t an inconvenience to you. In the morning, you can then log off and shut down the computer before you leave for work.

The power of automatic updates

Of course, many of today’s best antivirus programs contain a useful automatic updating feature. Using this tool, the program automatically checks for updates whenever you fire it up. You may even be able to schedule antivirus updates at a certain time of day – say, when you’re not using your computer.

Even though it may seem tedious, it is very important to check for updates on your antivirus software every day. You need to have the best protection possible in order to avoid some of today’s newest viruses, phishing schemes, hacking attacks, and other dangerous forms of malware. While it may seem annoying today, just think of all the hassle that one little update can save you at some point in the future.
